The online indie community is buzzing about MOO, an online printing company.
MOO seems to target mainly small businesses with their very affordable (or should I dare say actually cheap) prices on mini business cards (100 for 20$ USD), sticker books (new from today) and note cards. Everything is actually easy to customize with your own designs or pictures (you can use your Flickr pictures directly). It has a very big DIY (Do It Yourself) feeling!
At first sight, feels like nothing is wrong with this picture! I have absolutely nothing against MOO itself, it’s a great solution for many small businesses!
My beef is the contradiction between MOO and the indie community. Indie products are supposed to be unique and in many cases, they are handmade. Indie is usually all about the time put into a product, from the first idea flash to the actual making of the product. And also all about the people behind the products.
Where as MOO is about a big company & a big machine, mass production, about A LOT of people having a variation of the same thing, and having no contact whatsoever with “real” people.
This contradiction bothers me!
I prefer printing locally, or with an indie printer guy or gal that I will find online, or myself on my awesome soon-to-be-bought Canon Pixma Pro9000 printer! (Can’t wait to buy that bad boy this week! lol)
Maybe it’s the fact that I am a graphic designer and that I like the whole process of printing locally my work for clients, with actual people and actual meetings, and do approbations and all?
What do you all think? :)
** My goal is not to make people feel bad about having bought some MOO, and not to discourage people from doing so in the future! Everyone can decide for themselves what is good for their needs!
I just thought this might be an interesting topic to discuss and share my thoughts on! :) **
